Our Partnerships

A focus on uplifting the environment is not complete without considering the opportunities available for community upliftment too. Enterprise Development and CSI therefore form critical pillars to Interwaste's commitment to the community and as such,

they have partnerships within the community that are taken very seriously and which they always look to expand on.

a) Enterprise Development:

Interwaste enables self-sustaining SMME ventures through the transfer of business skills and the provision of start-up resources.

Mangena Recycling and Cleaning Services:

This is a 100% black-owned company, made possible by Interwaste and contributed to by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) which aims to develop job opportunities and entrepreneurial skills within the recycling field.

In June 2014, Interwaste set up this business (including a recycling plant and equipment) for the community members of the neighbouring rural township - Dikhthole Designed to educate those involved around environmental awareness, each of the 81 employees within the business has been trained in an array of different fields including: machine operations, health and safety, fire marshalling, first aid and the identification of varying waste streams.

All waste is collected from ACSA daily and is brought to the sorting warehouse where employees of Mangena sort and manage the waste, for recycling, reuse or disposal. To this end, all revenues generated from this business are allocated to Mangena accordingly.

Interwaste provide the following, at no cost to the company, to ensure the sustainability and support of this organisation and its people.

  • Transportation of waste streams to the recycling station set up in Germiston
  • Warehouse rental costs of the recycling facility
  • Water and electricity running costs on a daily basis to run the facility
  • All initial costs and maintenance of the bailing machinery
  • Account management and transaction oversight for wages and other payments
Sappi Village assistance:

Interwaste implemented an initiative to create employment for members of the previously disadvantaged community of the Sappi Village at Ngodwana, Mpumalanga. Interwaste provided a plant, equipment and working capital to a black female member of the community - enabling her initiate a waste recycling operation in the local area. She currently employs more than five people in what is now a profitable, sustainable business operation.

b) CSI Initiatives:
Tops & Tags

The Interwaste Tops & Tags project is run through the community (churches, corporates, schools, individuals and charities) and encourages people to bring plastic bread tags and bottle tops from home for recycle. The more tops and tags collected, the closer the entity gets towards their goal of earning a wheelchair, which can then be donated to a registered recipient of their choice.

The process is simple, for every specified number of kg's of bottle tops and bread tags Interwaste receives from participants, one registered recipient receives a wheelchair. To date, we have not only collected approximately 81 900kg of tops and tags, but have also donated 273 wheelchairs to those in need - since inception of the initiative in 2011. This is part of the company's larger strategy, in using their business model in innovative ways to give back to the community/s in which they operate.

Casa Caritas

There is a dire need to assist charities that provide selfless life-long care to physically and mentally disabled people. As a family business, one that is dedicated to their staff and their well-being, Interwaste understand that there are many families out there who live in far more difficult circumstances and believe that supporting those in need is a key value. In 2010, the company started working with Casa Caritas in support of Interwaste's staff that have family members living at the home and to date (June 2015), have donated over R380 000 to support this home as well as provided facility upgrades in a number of different areas of requirement.

Executive Management
Alan Willcocks
Chief Executive Officer

Alan Willcocks co-founded Interwaste (Pty) Ltd with Bronwyn in 1989 and was instrumental in listing the business in 2007. Over the past 27 years Alan has acquired an in-depth knowledge of the waste management sector. He is renowned for innovative waste management solutions and his drive to continually provide better service levels to customers. He is respected and well known in the waste management industry. In addition to being CEO of Interwaste Holdings Limited, Alan sits on the boards of a number of companies within the Interwaste Group including Interwaste (Pty) Ltd, Interwaste Properties (Pty) Ltd, Platinum Waste Resources (Pty) Ltd, Extent Road Property (Pty) Ltd and Greens Scrap Recycling (Pty) Ltd. He is also a director of Trade Our Way (Pty) Ltd and Glynden Props 21 (Pty) Ltd.

Chief Financial Officer

Robert Lumb holds the position of Chief Financial Officer at Interwaste. He has over 20 years’ experience in the financial field. He was previously the Chief Financial Officer of Barloworld Logistics. Robert has a Bcom and post-grad in Accounting and Finance and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1993.

Mike Nicholls
Divisional Director Technical Services

Mike Nicholls holds a B.Sc. Honours degree (UNP). He is passionate about waste reuse and regards waste as a valuable resource. Mike is also a director of Waste-X (Pty) Ltd. Mike runs the group’s Research and Development Department as well as the state of the art laboratory situated at the Interwaste head office in Germiston.

Dan Nkomo
Enterprise Development Director

Dan Nkomo has been employed by Interwaste for 24 years. He has extensive knowledge of waste management, operations and logistics. Dan possesses qualifications in road transport management from the University of the Witwatersrand and the Rand Afrikaans University respectively. Dan is a director of a number of Interwaste group companies including Interwaste (Pty) Ltd, Greens Scrap Recycling (Pty) Ltd, Envirowaste SA (Pty) Ltd and Interwaste Onsite (Pty) Ltd.

Regional Director

Hennie holds an MBA (GIBS) and has been involved in waste management for the last 20 years. He is passionate about finding the most effective solutions in transporting waste from customer to end destination. Hennie is responsible for the group’s Mozambiquan operations, Secunda and the Vaal, as well as the Northwest Province.

Regional Director

Graeme Bayford has been active within the waste industry for the past 12 years and holds a National Diploma within the Environmental Sciences. Graeme is responsible for the group’s coastal operations as well as operations in the Northern Province.

Group Human Resource Director

Rajas Pillay holds the following qualifications: BA, BProc, Advanced Diploma and Masters Degree (Labour Law and Employee Relations) and has passed the Attorneys Board Exam. She has more than 19 years’ experience in human resource strategy, transformation, corporate legal and employee relations matters. Rajas is a director of the following Interwaste group companies: Interwaste (Pty) Ltd, Greens Scrap Recycling (Pty) Ltd, Envirowaste SA (Pty) Ltd, Interwaste Onsite (Pty) Ltd, Platinum Waste Resources (Pty) Ltd and Drakenstein Energy (Pty) Ltd.

Leon Grobbelaar
Group Facilities Management Director

Leon Grobbelaar obtained a National Diploma in soil conservation in 1983 and obtained a National Higher Diploma in Irrigation. He joined Fraser Alexander Waste in 1989 as Operations Manager responsible for the operation and management of landfills. After the acquisition of Waste-Tech by Fraser Alexander he was seconded to Waste-Tech as landfill manager. In 1995 he obtained a Diploma in Road Transportation through the Rand Afrikaans University. He has extensive experience in landfill management and is currently the Group’s Facilities Management Director. Leon sits on a number of boards within the Interwaste Group including Interwaste (Pty) Ltd and Drakenstein Energy (Pty) Ltd. He is also a director of Casa Caritas Home for the Disabled.

Group Sales and Marketing Director

Jason McNeil holds an MBA (GIBS). He has spent the last 21 years in the operational management of environmental solutions in South Africa. Jason is the sales director for Interwaste (Pty) Ltd and a director of Masakhane Interwaste (Pty) Ltd.
